Muslim Reflection

Do you see the one who denies the faith? Then such is the one who repels the orphan and does not encourage the feeding of the poor. Woe to those who are neglectful of their prayers, those who want to be seen but refuse to supply their neighbours’ needs.

These verses from the Quran, the Muslim holy revelation, provide a definition of those who deny faith/God in terms of how they treat the weakest and most needy in society. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would further elaborate and say that the one who sleeps with a full stomach while their neighbour is hungry does not belong to the community of faithful.

Yet, many of us go to bed every night while thousands of our neighbours and fellow citizens stay up from the pangs of hunger. And we expect God to answer our prayers?

A Muslim sage was once asked about poverty. His response was the following: if poverty were a man, I would have killed it. That’s because poverty (and the same goes for hunger) is the sort of condition that if experienced on an ongoing basis, diminishes people’s sense of worth and dignity. So, let’s pray and work for everyone to have a decent meal, every day.
