We write as people of different faiths, traditions and value systems. Although we are diverse, we have at least one value in common. We are concerned about hunger in Manitoba. A single person living on EIA is allotted only $3.96 per day for food. $3.96 is not enough for a healthy, balanced diet. The basic needs allowance has not been increased since 2004. Manitoba is rich enough that its people should not be suffering from malnutrition. Nor should they have to rely on charity for food.
We are calling on the government of Manitoba to help those who are most vulnerable by responding to Make Poverty History Manitoba’s campaign and increasing the EIA basic needs allowance for Manitobans who are living in the deepest poverty.
